Supported Digital Wallets

Scotiaconnect debit and credit cards work with Apple Pay on iOS, Google Pay on Android, and Samsung Pay on Samsung devices — add your card once and tap to pay everywhere contactless payments are accepted.

Each digital wallet provides the same core experience: add your Scotiaconnect card, authenticate with your device's biometric or passcode security, and hold your phone near a contactless payment terminal to complete a purchase. Apple Pay integrates with iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac. Google Pay works across Android phones, tablets, and Wear OS watches. Samsung Pay adds compatibility with traditional magnetic stripe terminals through MST technology on select Samsung phone models, in addition to standard NFC contactless terminals. The Scotiaconnect app includes a one-tap shortcut to add your card to any of these wallets from the Card Management screen.

Setup takes under a minute. Open the Scotiaconnect app, tap the card you want to add, select "Add to Digital Wallet," and choose Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. Scotiaconnect sends a verification code to your registered phone or email. Enter the code in the wallet app, and the card activates immediately. The same Scotiaconnect card can exist in multiple wallets simultaneously — add it to your iPhone for Apple Pay and your Android tablet for Google Pay if you use devices on both platforms.

Tokenization and Security

Scotiaconnect digital wallet payments never share your actual card number — each wallet generates a unique device account number (token) that replaces your real card digits, protecting your account from merchant data breaches.

When you add a Scotiaconnect card to Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay, the wallet requests a token from the Scotiaconnect payment network. This token — a 16-digit device account number — replaces your physical card number. Every tap-to-pay transaction sends the token plus a transaction-specific dynamic security code to the payment terminal. The merchant never sees your real Scotiaconnect card number, expiration date, or CVV. If that merchant later suffers a data breach, your tokenized card data is useless to attackers — the token works only on your specific device and cannot be used for purchases from any other phone or computer.

Wallet authentication adds a second layer of protection. Before the phone transmits payment data, you must authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint recognition, or a device passcode depending on your phone model. Without this biometric or passcode confirmation, the wallet will not complete the payment — even if someone steals your phone. Additionally, the Scotiaconnect app lets you remotely remove your cards from all digital wallets instantly if your device is lost or stolen. Sign in to online banking, navigate to Card Management, and select "Remove from Digital Wallets." The tokens are deactivated within seconds.

Using Digital Wallets for Online Purchases

Scotiaconnect digital wallet cards work for online and in-app purchases where Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay appear as checkout options — your real card number stays out of the merchant's database entirely.

When you shop online or within apps, websites and apps that support digital wallet checkouts display an Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay button alongside traditional credit card fields. Selecting the wallet button triggers a payment sheet that displays your shipping address, contact information, and the last four digits of your tokenized Scotiaconnect device account number. Confirm the payment with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode, and the transaction completes. The merchant receives the tokenized card number plus the dynamic security code — never your physical Scotiaconnect card details. This approach eliminates the risk of card number theft from merchant database breaches, which according to FTC data represent a significant vector for payment card fraud.

Subscriptions set up through digital wallets remain tokenized for recurring billing. When a monthly subscription renews, the same device account token processes the charge, but the dynamic security code changes each time. If you lose your phone or replace it, subscriptions linked to that device's token will fail on the next billing attempt — protecting you from continued charges on a lost device while giving you time to add your Scotiaconnect card to your new phone's wallet.

Managing Digital Wallet Cards

The Scotiaconnect Card Management dashboard displays every digital wallet linked to each card — view, add, suspend, or remove wallet connections instantly from the online banking interface or mobile app.

Each Scotiaconnect debit and credit card maintains a list of active digital wallet connections. The dashboard shows the wallet type (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay), the device name (e.g., "John's iPhone 15" or "Galaxy S24"), the date the card was added, and the last transaction made with that wallet connection. You can suspend a wallet connection temporarily — useful when you misplace your phone — without removing it entirely. When you find the device, re-enable the connection from the same dashboard. Permanent removal deletes the token and requires a new verification code if you want to re-add the card later.

Transaction history distinguishes between physical card swipes and digital wallet taps. The Scotiaconnect transaction feed labels each purchase with the payment method used — "Apple Pay," "Google Pay," or "Samsung Pay" plus the device name. This makes it straightforward to spot unauthorized usage: if a "Google Pay" transaction appears but you don't own an Android device, someone may have compromised your account. The real-time fraud monitoring system also evaluates wallet-based purchases for patterns that deviate from your established behavior.
